A 60-day voyage circling the Land Down Under is being halted following the tragic passing of an elderly lady who was stranded by the ship on a remote island.

The elderly woman had been trekking on Lizard Island with shipmates from the Coral Adventurer, but parted ways from the excursion for a break. The ship left without her and came back later that day after the personnel became aware the woman was unaccounted for.

An extensive search operation found her person the subsequent day.

Investigative bodies are looking into the incident, alongside investigators and the state coroner.

Chief Executive of the cruise operator stated that guests and crew on the vessel were told that the rest of the journey had been terminated due to the "unfortunate death and prior mechanical issues".

In a statement, he further stated that guests would be given a full refund, and said the operator was working "to coordinate the homeward trips of the individuals via chartered flights".

Regulatory bodies also issued an revised statement, and said they had "issued a notice to the Captain" prohibiting any additional guests from getting on the liner.

The representative said that they would inspect the ship in Cairns upon its arrival.
