The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
