The McLaren driver just pipped team-mate and title rival the Australian for the fastest time in the final moments of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who took the title advantage from Piastri by one point after his victory in Mexico City two weeks ago, beat the Melbourne-born driver by a mere 0.023s. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the leading McLaren during the running before the sprint shootout due at the evening session. Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in the championship fight, lying 36 points behind behind Norris, was classified in 17th place as his team ran a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to have an incident, albeit lightly, when he lost control at the fourth corner during the early running. The Japanese slid over the track edges before rotating through the gravel trap, and was blessed to escape with just a minor contact of the wall. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the conclusion of the practice, spinning around through the quick descending corner leading to the last turn on to the main straight. The veteran finished practice in 19th place, just behind teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren drivers were significantly quicker of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber third fastest, 0.619secs off Piastri's pace. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
